I’ve invented a device that gets you a job at Ford!

Well, it got me a job at Ford. I’m not sure of its authenticity nor if a repeat is possible, but alas I’ve got a job!

Without going into too much detail, I got a position doing controls engineering with a mechanical engineering degree and electrical engineering experience, because ya know I’m strange like that.

My question for all you Opponauts that live around the Dearborn area though, where the hell should I look to live? So far it seems that anywhere that seems like a great deal on housing will probably just result in all your shit getting stolen, and anywhere that seems like an OK deal in a good area has some absolutely awful ratings. Obviously you guys that’ve lived there for a long time have a much better idea of the area and might be able to tell me what apartments to avoid and which are top quality.

I used to commute from St. Clair to Dearborn. Hellatious commute of about 65 miles one way. We then moved to St. Clair Shores and it wasn’t terrible. Royal Oak is really nice (at least the last time I was around for any major length of time), but might be a bit of a headache during rush hour.
Personally, I’d stick North of 696 if you can. I don’t mind a longer drive for a nicer house/neighborhood (I currently have a 35+ mile commute but it’s in a vanpool thankfully).

house or apartment? If you’re looking to rent, there are some nicer apartments and condos in Dearborn like Fairlane East just off of Rotunda Drive. I wouldn’t go for anything in the northern suburbs, the main north-south routes like I-75 and (especially) I-94 are hell. I live in St. Clair Shores and I hate the commute.

One option which people who live there seem to like is Livonia. You can easily get to Hines Drive and take a nice leisurely cruise in and back home. Well, when it’s not flooded, that is.

just don’t be like some people I know who live all the way in the north end of fucking Shelby Twp, then constantly complain about their commute.

Yea I’ve been mostly looking at places in either the Royal Oak area or the suburbs all the way south of the city. Seems like traffic is pretty light from there.

Hard to answer without knowing your priorities...

I bought a house in Livonia...short commute, safe area, good schools, property value stability, central location to all I’m interested in.

Younger crowd likes Royal Oak area, Ann Arbor, and/or trendy downtown Detroit...more established people seem to like Livonia, Plymouth, Northville, Novi, etc.

If I convince one of my buddies to go in on a place either, but more likely apartment. Haven’t looked into Livonia much but I’ll give it some more attention.

If he does go in on a place with me it gets a lot more complicated because he’s working all the way in Auburn Hills. AKA most of the places I’m looking at then are right in that area where traffic goes to shit

oh, and you’re just in time to see them completely overhaul the campus. it’s about time, some of these buildings should have been renovated or replaced 30 years ago.

what building will you be working in? By “controls” do you mean interior/driver controls, or industrial control systems for like the assembly plants?

Fair enough, not married and no kids so don’t have to worry about all that. Most likely looking to rent an apartment because as of now I’m going in solo. I’ll have to look into Livonia more, seems like most people that are around there enjoy it.

oh, that’s ugly. The “happy medium” between Dearborn and Auburn Hills would be something like Birmingham or Bloomfield Hills, but those are “old money” and $$$$. Royal Joke or Ferndale may be your best bet; but you’ll probably be choosing between a small flat or an overpriced loft apartment. the downside to that is none of the drives are very good; I-75 will be a parking lot, and the less said about the Southfield freeway the better. Telegraph south in the morning isn’t bad, but is terrible going north at the end of the day.

The 275 corridor isn’t too bad either; Canton and Belleville are nice quiet communities, and you’d be close to Dearborn for work and Ann Arbor for fun. North of there it starts to get expensive fast in Plymouth and Novi.

Most of the new people we’ve had here seem to be buying places in the Farmington & Farmington Hills area.

Check out something like http://www.neighborhoodscout.com so you know which areas to avoid (i.e. Inkster, certain parts of Detroit, Pontiac).

To be honest Livonia itself is pretty boring. No nightlife or any of that...but it is a pretty affordable and accessible area. General rule of thumb is that the closer you get to Detroit, the suckier things get. However there are pockets in Dearborn, etc. that are quite nice.

Yea that’s kinda been the theme. Been looking around Farmington Heights and all that to try and find something wit ha reasonable-ish drive and location. Not the easiest compromise.

Not 100% sure, but from the sounds the “engineering lab”. So I’m thinking possibly dyno.

Do you work for Ford?

Yep. I’m in Electrical/Electronics.

sounds like you’ll be in FEL, which is basically behind the Henry Ford museum. Or maybe APTL by the freeway.

Pretty sure it’ll be FEL. Should be a nice change of pace from working in Iowa either way, that’s for sure.

EDIT: Maybe we’ll cross paths someday there, I’m gonna be doing a lot of electrical work as well you could say. Though probably in a different sense.

Winter is fine; the whole campus uses district (steam) heat from the powerhouse attached to FEL. Don’t know what the A/C is like in summer.

oh, and when the sinks all have signs saying “CAUTION: HOT WATER IS VERY HOT” they mean it. hot water comes from heat exchangers in the steam system, and I don’t think the temperature is regulated.
